There is a remarkable degree of unanimity within New Testament scholarship on the date of John’s Epistles. Many modern writers, based largely on the opinion of Irenaeus, date them during the closing decade of the first century (Moody 14; Hunter 175). Kistemaker (218) is typical of many who reflect a conservative viewpoint; he dates all three letters between A.D. 90 and 95.
